Today I thought I’d talk about my plans for conquering the Half Dome hike in Yosemite! I’ve been waiting to mark that bad boy off of my bucket list for years. Just thinking of the view from the top gives me goosebumps of excitement!

We’re flying outta DFW on the 25th, landing in San Francisco and seeing the town for a bit (maybe going to TJ’s for the FIRST TIME EVER), driving up to Yosemite and then staying there for about a week. I think it’ll be a super fun family vacation– nothing beats national parks and San Francisco is such a neat city!! :)
So…… more about the hike–

Cool/scary stats:
- 16-17 miles round trip
- Hike can take anywhere from 10-12 hours
- The last steep 400 feet of the climb up the face of the rock involves cables that are set up every May
- The elevation will increase by 4,800 feet from Yosemite’s Valley Floor, almost 1 mile
My mom decided to sit this one out, but my dad agreed to join me on my quest! Since the hike is so massive, we are planning to leave a little before sunrise so we can make the round trip in daylight.
Here’s my main hiking gear:
- hiking boots
- camera
- Camelbak backpack with water pack built in
- thick hiking socks
- water bottles
- SUNSCREEN!
And of course there’s the usual stuff like extra socks, ponchos, first aid kits, water purifier tablets, bug spray, jackets, and emergency toilet paper haha
And (since this blog is semi-related to food) here are some of the snacks I plan to pack:
- Homemade beef and turkey jerky
- Quest bars and Tanka bars
- Homemade dried fruit and veggies
- Nuts and seeds
- Whey protein to pour in water bottles
- Sandwiches (probably pb&j)
- Coconut water for electrolytes
I kinda feel like a squirrel storing stuff away for winter–My stash is beginning to grow mwahaha
Is it going to be a hardcore challenge? Yes. Especially for my sea-level lungs.
Am I nervous I won’t make it? Yes.
But you know something? Ya only live once, my dad and I are in great physical shape and have the necessary equipment, and we have mental toughness and God on our side. In other words…this dome SHALL be conquered!!
(unless it rains of course haha)
If you’re interested in doing this one day, here’s a great link all about it!

Well that’s about it from my corner of the world– I’m off to go enjoy this lovely day! Hope you all had a great Mom’s day yesterday and hope you have a great week ahead, too!
What is the longest hike you’ve been on? Favorite hiking snacks?

You’ll make it! No worries.
Wow those views! That sounds like such a challenge but it’ll be so worth it when you do it and I love your attitude to it – can’t wait to see your pictures from it!
This is so awesome! I’ve never been on a real serious hike. I would definitely love to take one on some day!
i’m so excited for you! i did the machu picchu hike in peru and it took 4 days but it was the best 4 days of my life! i am fully confident that you’re going to do awesome!
how fun!!! I seriously LOVE hiking. That is the best stress reliever ever. I’m sure you’ll do fine and have a blast!!!
You are TOTALLY going to be able to make it!! I know you will
Whoa that seems like quite the trek! but very cool!
Favorite hiking snacks are definitely trail mix and crackers
That is so exciting! How cool!!! And to be able to experience this with your dad, how awesome! I cannot wait to hear how it all goes! This is definitely something I would like to cross of my bucket list one day!
sounds exciting!!! your stash sounds amazing. i’m bad when it comes to packing…i probably would forget something crucial (like a jacket, or even a water bottle -.-)
that’s my biggest fear! i have a massive checklist going so i won’t forget to pack undies haha
Holy 16-17 miles. I would die! I am so not a long distance walker/runner. That may kill me
It sounds super intense, but would be such an awesome adventure for you!! It will also be great to get in some dad-daughter time
GO GO GO!!!! You can climb it, you can climb it!!!
And go to TJ’s, too…. you will come away with 13+ bags of goodness!!! (If you can, try the egg plant wrap for lunch!!! TO DIE FOR!!!!)
Oooh that sounds tasty! I’ll keep my eyes peeled!
DUDEEEE THIS IS SO EPIC!!!!!!! I have always wanted to see Yosemite, and to hike up it?!? oh man. Trip of a lifetime. And that’s definitely a lotta miles, I think 15 is the most I’ve ever hiked in one day – I accompanied my sister through Virginia on the appalachian trail last year (she thru-hiked it), and yeah….lots of miles….VA was not too steep though. BUT I know you’re in bombtastic shape and you’ve got some good fuelage planned, so I have no doubt you’re going to make it!!
whoa! that sounds awesome/scary/exhilarating all at once!
What an awesomesauce hike! The hikes I’ve done have always been at high altitude, like around 2 miles high, but I’ve never done a 16-17 mile hike. I’ve always wanted to climb a fourteener though!
You’ll love San Fran…and I’m super jealous that you get to go to TJ’s when you’re there!
The longest hike I’ve been one was 12 miles. And for snacks, nothing beats energy density like a good, homemade trail mix!
OH my gosh I am SOSOSOOO excited for you!! The longest hike I’ve done was just shy of 10 miles..16-17 miles is NO joke!! I want to hike this sooo bad!! Good luck and I love your snack pack!
you will do AWESOME
you are so full of life and I am so happy that you get to cross this off of your bucket list! you are so inspiring sweetie
I have always wanted to do a hike like you’re going to do! All the hard work will be worth it when you see the view!!
that hike is going to be epic! can’t wait to hear all about it
enjoy san francisco too!
That sounds AWESOME!!!!
Whoa, crazy intense hike! I want to hike more. I’ve tackled that distance, but nowhere near that elevation! You’ll definitely make it.. When it gets hard, just put one foot in front of the other and make it work. You’ll be surprised how far you can push yourself!
Thanks girl! One foot in front of the other is totally gonna be my mantra
Holy moly what an epic journey!!! Going on a hike like this is sooo on my to-do list! Your dad sounds like the most perfect person to do this with
Favorite hiking snacks- protein/energy bars, trail mix (I mean of course!), fresh fruit, sandwiches, and water water water!
whoa, this is going to be awesome. Can’t wait to see some of the pictures from it. Jealous of that homemade beef and turkey jerky, best fuel ever!
oooh my just looking at that photo is making me feel giddy lol!! Have a fab time
Wow this hike sounds intense!!! But also super fun. I think the longest hike I’ve ever done was only 3-4 hours, so it was nothing compared to this!
Whaaat! 16-17 miles?? That is some INTENSE stuff right there! Make sure to take plenty of pictures at the top so those of us who aren’t hiking can partake in the sightseeing
I’m so jealous! I asked my fiance if we could do this one day and he said good luck because he’s afraid of heights and refused to go with me…can I come with you? wahhh one day I will do it! haha:)
Come in my suitcase as a stowaway!!
This sounsd AWESOME! Going on a hike like this is definetely on my bucket list too so I can’t wait to read all about it! That’s great that your dad agreed to do it with you, nothing like father-daughter bonding time
! Have you tried Cliff Bars? I bet they would be great hiking fuel!
I have! I love the taste of their flavors, but they always make me oober queasy afterwards…??
This is so exciting! I can’t wait to hear your recap of it…you’re going to have a blast!
Favorite hiking snacks = Clif bars, bananas, and trail mix!
Oh my goodness, I would be so nervous too, but you are taking a great attitude because you are right, we do only live once! I am afraid of heights and even ski lifts kind of freak me out, so I don’t think I would like to go on an intense hike haha! It looks like you got some great snacks stored! Yay quest bars
